A Study on Fatigue of Nurses in Clinical Areas



Abstract
The authors conducted this study to find out degree of fatigue of nurses performing active nursing service at hospitals. The data were gathered from 475 nurses at 4 hospitals during the eriod of January through February 1973. In order to measure the subjective symptoms of fatigue, the investigators applied on application form of fatigue, designed by the Labour and Health Institute of Japan to the subjects before and after duty. The evaluation form of fatigue contains three symptoms; physical, mental and neurosensory fatigue with 10-items each.
The results of this study were analyzed as follows.
1) There were significantly high frequency of "general physical tiredness,"
"tiredness of thigh and leg," in physical f atigue(p <0. 05?p <0. 01).
2) There were high frequency of mental fatigue such as "does not even want
to talk," "being sleepy" were complained by nurses in day and night shift.
3) There were remarkably high frequency of "legs are shaken" in neuro-
sensory fatigue.
4) Fatigue frequency before and after work by shift showed that the frequency was high in order of the night, the evening and the day shift and they especially complained the physical fatigue at the significant level.
5) Fatigue frequency according to the ward they are working in showed that the nurses working at the medical ward complained physical fatigue and those at operating room complained mental and neuro-sensory fatigue than the other one.
